Ribbons for card printers
A card printer ribbon, often referred to as a “retransfer ribbon” or “retransfer film,” is an essential component of a card printer used to print plastic ID cards. The ribbon contains ink that is transferred to the card through a printing process. This process can vary depending on the type of printer, but essentially, the ink is pressed onto the card to create text, images, and other data.
Here are some common types of card printer ribbons:
- YMCKO Ribbon: This ribbon contains four colors (yellow, magenta, cyan, black) and a protective layer (O). It is often used for full-color printing and an overlay to protect the card.
- KDO Ribbon: This ribbon contains only black (K), colorless (D), and an overlay (O). It is usually used for black and white printing or monochrome printing with a protective layer.
- K Ribbon: This ribbon contains only black (K) and is intended for single-color printing.
- Holographic Ribbons: These ribbons feature holographic patterns and are used for added security and a visually appealing finish to the cards.
The type of ribbon you need will depend on the specifications of your card printer and the nature of the cards you are printing. If you need specific recommendations for your printer model, I can help with that too!
